The National Library of Ireland is delighted to offer an in-person workshop, led by the Digital Preservation Coalition, on building requirements and preparing to select a digital preservation system. The NLI are keen to create a forum that brings together peer institutions to learn and share experiences, challenges, and best practices in the evolving realm of digital preservation. The workshop will take place in the recently launched Joly lecture theatre at the NLI on the 25th September 2024.
Following on from last year’s event on developing a Digital Preservation Policy, this event aims to further the digital preservation journey for institutions who wish to acquire their first digital repository/preservation system, or transition to a new system. Understanding your organisational context and needs is an essential, and often overlooked step in selecting the most appropriate system. The workshop will provide methods to assess these needs and gaps and how to build a compelling business case.
The workshop will cover the diverse landscape of digital preservation systems and focus on 10 Core Requirements that any digital preservation system should meet. Participants will be given guidance on how to develop their own requirements and use cases in order to select the best possible system.
There will be three case studies that showcase various approaches to procuring a system, including the Irish Traditional Music Archive, Royal College of Physicians and the National Library of Ireland.
Additionally, we will share common pitfalls, lessons learned, and insights from DPC members. Guidance on the practical steps following system selection will also be provided.
This session is aimed at those who are planning on purchasing a system, or who are looking to move from an existing system. Group exercises and networking time will be a key element of the session, providing attendees with the chance to discuss issues with fellow practitioners and aid with building a community of practice in Ireland.
Due to the format of the workshop, places are limited. Please fill in the following expression of interest form by the 30th of August. Successful applicants will be notified in early September.
