The 2006 AGM of the Academic & Special Libraries Section was held on Thursday 22 June 2006 in The Glass Room, TCD School of Nursing & Midwifery, D’Olier Street.

We were delighted to welcome Ruth Flanagan, President of the Library Association of Ireland ,who spoke to the meeting about “The LAI and the importance of Continuing Professional Development for Information Professionals.” She gave an interesting account of the history and role of the LAI in promoting professional Librarianship in Ireland since 1928, and spoke about the ways in which the LAI was now looking to promote continuing professional development. An initiative has been undertaken by the Education Committee to promote the scheme of Associateship, and members have all been sent a promotional leaflet explaining the benefits of the scheme and how to participate. Employers have also been notified and are encouraged to facilitate their staff in completing Associateship. Ruth concluded by encouraging participation by members in the LAI, in whatever way they felt they could contribute – the LAI is the sum of the activities of all its members.

The committee presented their report on activities for the past year, and a summary of the sections’ income and expenditure.

The new committee for 2006 / 2007 were announced – full details are listed above. The evening concluded with a lively discussion, assisted by great food and drink! Many thanks to all who attended.
