Designing Libraries A job for Architects and Librarians

The AGM of the Library Association of Ireland will be held this year in Cork in the City Library to mark 125 years since the establishment of the public library service in the city. This year there will be an additional event, to begin once the formal business of the AGM is completed.

This will be a moderated discussion on library buildings, both academic and public:

  • What librarians want from new buildings, and how what they get compares with what they wanted.
  • What architects expect from librarians in designing library buildings, how they approach a building such as a Library.

The three participants:

  • Mairead Owens will act as moderator. Mairead is the County Librarian for Dún Laoghaire Rathdown and recently went through the process of taking the LexIcon in Dún Laoghaire from a concept to a functioning library, open seven days each week.
  • Louise Cotter, of the Cork studio Carr Cotter Naessens has been in practice for over 30 years. Although based in Cork since 2001, Carr Cotter Naessens work throughout the country on public and residential projects. They were appointed to design the dlrLexicon in Dun Laoghaire following an international competition in 2007 and Louise Cotter managed the design and construction stages of this flagship library to completion.
  • John Fitzgerald is University Librarian and Head of Information Services in UCC, and recently planned, fund-raised, and managed a €25 million extension to the Boole Library on the main university campus. dlrLexicon has received a number of awards including the RIBA International Excellence Award 2017, AAI Award 2017 and the Civic Trust Special Jury Award.
